Sphinx and the SFCO

Maestro Ben Simon had become increasingly aware of the marvellous work that the
Sphinx organization had been doing. They fit into his vision of expanding the diversity of the soloists,
particularly Debut Artists, that the orchestra featured each season. He reached out to Andre Dowell in 2013, their Artistic Administrator and Competition Director to discuss bringing a winner of
the Sphinx Competition to the Bay Area as a Debut Artist.

Cellist Sterling Elliot was the SFCO’s first Sphinx laureate to perform as soloist with the orchestra
during its 2014-2015 season. Since then the SFCO has featured seven Sphinx prize winners on its MainStage series.
